Cross Your T’s and Dot Your I’s

OK so when it comes to finding yourself a home-based business you want to know what to look for. There are so many companies out there that will promise you the world and overnight success. This is a bunch of crap. There are those networking queens or kings, that can go in and sell to anyone, but for most of us, this is not the case. Let’s just be realistic here. Starting a home-based business is an awesome way to supplement your income, but it’s a business, and it takes hard work and dedication. If you don’t have this you won’t make it. The good thing is, there are people out there that can teach you how, in the right way. So now that you are open to business, let’s take a look at some red flags.

The Hype

One of my biggest pet peeves is the hype. I’ve said it before in another post, but I hate when I see people posing in front of their fancy car or gigantoid (yes it’s a real word… I hope) house throwing money at you saying you can get rich quick. It’s not realistic and it sucks you in. Trust me I’ve fallen for it and their tactic works. The problem is, for most of us, this tactic is not effective when we use it. So, when you don’t get those results you quit. Your takeaway is, if you see the hype coming at you over the internet….run, run very far away.

Shoddy Products or Services

When you are looking into a home-based business, you want to know if they have quality products and good customer service. If you do your research ahead of time and find that your company’s products have these huge claims, and nothing to back it up, then put on your running shoes. Again, if you have poor quality products paired with crappy customer service, you are going to lose your prospects and your customers left and right.

Aggressive Sales Tactics

Some businesses push you to sell, sell, sell, to anyone and everyone, in turn, alienating your friends and family. Don’t get me wrong, I love to share my opportunity with those around me. However, I don’t like to push it on them (see my other post on not being sales-y). In a home-based business, a good opportunity, is a good opportunity, no matter what. If it’s a reputable company in good standing, with quality products, you won’t have a problem sharing it with those that it could benefit.

Poor Leadership

When you start your shiny new business you need someone to help you along the way, right! I’ve been there when I signed up, when I needed help or guidance, I heard crickets. Before you sign up, look at who your mentor will be and what qualities they have. If they don’t have those same qualities or seem sketchy ….here come the running shoes.

Check Your Gut

When it comes down to it, go with your gut. If you see the above red flags, take a step back, do your research and then make your decision to put on those running shoes. If the business and those who are in it do not meet your needs, then don’t do it.

Overall most home-based business opportunities are not this scary but there are some out there. You just need to take a hard look at what you want and go from there. I made my decision to start a business, did my research beforehand, to make sure it worked for me and my family.
