OK… so you have decided to start a business or you have already started one and you want to make sure you are not that person who comes off sales-y or pushy like “buy, buy, buy,” but you still want to share what you have to offer other people.

Here are some quick Do’s and Don’ts to ensure you don’t push people away or lose all your friends.

Don’t

Don’t connect with people just to sell to them. People see that coming a mile away and will avoid you at all costs. People don’t like to be sold to. Find a reason to connect with someone outside of selling to them. Listen, learn and connect what you have to offer to the problem they are having.

Don’t sell to just anyone. There used to be a time when the ability to sell a Ketchup Popsicle to a woman in white gloves, was the thing that would make you good at sales. Now the ability to sell is determined through searching for people that are in your target audience, this is a much better use of your time. Instead of pitching to anyone with a pulse, focus your efforts on people who have a problem that your service or product can solve. Find out where your target market is hanging out and develop relationships there.

Do

Be real and make genuine connections. Don’t invite someone out to lunch just with the intent to pitch them your business. Invite them out because you want to genuinely get to know what they are up to.

Create original content that reflects your personality and uses your voice. Your content should follow the 80/20 rule, meaning 20% should be business related and 80% should be everything else. You can post useful information, tips, add your own interests, and insert some of your own humor to connect to people.

Story telling is very valuable for engaging with other people and making them feel connected to you, tell them what you do, and what service you can provide. Tell a story about a positive experience another client had (which is great social proof) or tell your own story of how this opportunity has changed your life.

Use social media to leverage your business. Create a face book business page where you can create all of your great content and invite your friends a family to join you and make connections there.

Share how your product or service can help benefit your customer. Sales is not about you, it’s about them. Learn about peoples challenges, personally and professionally, and find out how you can make their lives easier.
